The Love Rug and Other Tales

One Tuesday night in June 2003, a crowd gathered in Macy’s rug department to look for a rug they referred to as a Love Rug. This two hundred strong crowd wasn’t interested in area rugs – they were taking part in the Mob Project, an e-mail experiment in organizing groups of people who appear in public places, interact with others (in this case a mystified rug salesman) according to a loose script and then disperse just as abruptly as they showed up.

In another rug story, soon after the Soviet assault on Afghanistan area rugs bearing images of Soviet weaponry started showing up in global rug markets. The AK-47’s and other weapons are shown in intense, precise detail on the rugs, signifying that the rug weaver had really seen the items she was weaving into her rugs. These area rugs came in a variety of sizes and were woven by traditional rug weavers in Afghanistan.

Another Odd Rug

You won’t see many serious rug people examining the room-sized area rugs tagged “Heriz Rug” and arguing the finer points of the rugs’ color, design, and structure if you visit a rug auction. It seems that the problem with Heriz rugs is that they are openly commercial, or were when they were made. The people of the Heriz district in Northwest Persia made these area rugs to sell to the West in the 1870s for money and no other reason.

Rather than look ahead, rug collectors tend to look back, so it’s hard to tell if Heriz rugs or Afghan war rugs will turn out to be rug collectors’ items one hundred years from now. On the other hand, both rugs are beautiful enough to be considered for that category. Maybe the Love Rug will fit in too.
