Persian Area Rugs And Carpets

The earliest existing pile carpet on earth is a Persian carpet named the “Pazyryk Carpet.” This Persian style carpet is generally dated to the 5^th century BC. Sergei Ivanovich Rudenko unearthed the carpet after World War II from a Siberian graveyard where it had been preserved in ice in the Valley of Pazyryk. The earliest existing body of Persian carpets was created under the Safavid Dynasty in the 16^th century. Painted illustrations, however, confirm a longer history of carpet manufacture.

For centuries carpet weaving by hand has been a Persian industry, though it has also been, and still is, practiced in a lot of European countries. The simple customary technique for making Persian style carpets is as follows: the foundation is a warp of strong cotton, hemp, wool or silk threads. Short lengths of colored wool are knotted on to the warp threads and the two ends of the wool project in front. These tufts are carefully compacted and clipped to form an even carpet surface.
