Chinese Art Deco Rugs

“Chinese art deco rugs, hand knotted wool, China, c. 1930’s.” “Art deco rug, China, c. 1940, wine red, near mint condition.” What do these rugs have in common? Besides being made in China in the art deco style, both are available online at discount prices. Art deco usually costs around $4000 for a room-sized rug, so 15-20% off must be good news. The online selection of art deco area rugs is huge, so what are you waiting for?

Rugs woven in China prior to 1935 include Peking, Nichols and Fette. Nichols rug production started in the early 20th century, right through to the 1930’s. The designs of many of the Nichols area rugs were influenced by the Art Deco period. Attractive wool designs were mixed together to generate an area rug look and style that has remained popular.

So what exactly is art deco? It is a movement in design, interior decoration and architecture in 1920’s and ‘30’s Europe and the US..

What The Modern Wool Trade Created

The contemporary Chinese rug trade owes a great deal to the deco manufacture. Tianjin deco rugs tend to be loosely identified as “Nichols’” rugs in the West, after the best known of the city’s rug makers, Walter Nichols, who possibly created about a third of Tianjin’s output. Original Nichols rugs (at least those made in the art deco style) have “HAND MADE IN CHINA BY NICHOLS” stamped on the skirt.

Besides the classic art deco style, there are the contemporary rugs made by Montreal-based rug producer Carpet Art Deco, which took over Burlington Industries’ woven rug business in 2001. They sell deco inspired polypropylene and wool rugs retailing in the $100 to $700 price range.
